Seniors Riley Herren and Jesse Ham Sign National Letters of Intent
Riley Herren, a wide receiver for the Denver Christian football team, and Jesse Ham, a forward for the men's soccer team have signed National Letters of Intent with Concordia University and California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), respectively.
Riley, an 11-time Varsity letterman at DCS with four first-team all-conference honors, was recruited by more than 10 other colleges and universities, but last week, signed with Concordia University in Nebraska. A multi-sport athlete, Riley has participated in football, basketball, and track at Denver Christian, playing every season for all four years in high school.
Jesse, a two-time all-state player in Colorado was recruited by several Division I schools, but decided on Cal Poly after visiting the campus in August. The two deciding factors for his decision to attend Cal Poly were the academic program and support for the men's soccer team.
Congratulations, Jesse and Riley!
9News Highlights Denver Christian 8th Grader, Avery Sweeney
Avery Sweeney, an 8th grade student at Denver Christian – Highlands Ranch Campus, is engaged in the political process in a very tangible way. Avery has been researching laws regarding the licensing of senior drivers and is working hard to change the licensing requirements in Colorado. She has written a bill called “Grier’s Law” in honor of Grier Laughlin, a father who lost his life when an 89-year-old driver hit his car in a head-on collision. All three of his children were in the back seat and survived. Both Grier and the 89-year-old woman lost their lives. Grier was a coach to some of our students at Denver Christian and touched the lives of many children. Grier’s life inspired Avery to make a difference by contacting Colorado representatives and senators in hopes of finding a sponsor for the bill. If she cannot find a sponsor in this legislative session, Avery will try again in the future.
We are proud of Avery’s efforts and determination! To see the video clip from 9News, click here.
High School Students Attend International Worship Symposium
It's not every day that high school students get to attend an international convention focusing on an area of personal passion and interest! But for Kimi Bryson and Reannah Padilla, both juniors at DCHS, that opportunity became a reality this January as they attended the 25th annual Symposium on Christian Worship at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Together with their teacher, Wilma Wiersma, they joined 1800 attendees from 30 different countries for three days of learning -- and practice -- in the area of worship. They attended sessions such as Divine Play (ways to present Scripture through drama), Art as Prayer, and Drum Circle Worship. Bryson and Padilla are among the 18 students who participated at the high school this year in a pilot project for student-led worship, which involved leading chapels and taking a course called Worship Seminar.
